I generally try to dance around fourth-wall humour; the dialogue will (hopefully) remain valid in-universe while carrying a secret double meaning for the readers of the comic. I guess I'm shooting for "double-entendre" over "self-aware". Nobody here knows they're in a comic.
(Well, one or maybe two characters have an inkling. But I'll never tell.)
