Title of this post refers to a half-recalled tale of a group of people gathered in a tavern exchanging, in turn, elaborate tales of peril, suspense and derring do. Apparently tradition dictated that, at the most perilous moments of each story, all gathered would gasp and chorus "Did you die?" The point, I suppose, being to deflate the storyteller, who would naturally be trying to build tension by suggesting there was some chance that he could, retroactively, not survive to tell the tale.

I think this was a tale of actual people, though, and not a short story or other format where the punchline to the vignette would of course be for some tale-spinner to darkly reply, "Yes."

To in some way explain the relevance of the upper anecdote, I should perhaps direct readers to the beginning of this sequence.
